Birds island Griend, situated in the Wadden Sea between Harlingen and Terschelling, has been declared a nature reserve. To protect the island against the sea, an artificial sand bank has of three meters high has been put up, payed by CRM and Rijkswaterstaat. The island has the highest density of brooding birds in the Netherlands. SHOTS: sand bank; pan. island during daytime and during sunset, with beacon and a birdwatchers house on poles; ext. birdwatchers house with birdwatcher; different water birds, o.a. eider duck, oystercatchers, sandpipers, terns and gulls; gull brooding in a nest; close up nest with young bird crawling out of his egg; gull with young; int. birdwatchers house; two birdwatchers on island, one of them ringing a young tern.
